Banyan Batik’s Illusion Block 3
Hello Block of the Month friends,
It’s hard to believe we’re already in our third month. I hope your second block went together well. I’ve never had a lot of patience with applique, so while mine turned out so-so, it certainly wasn’t show quality. And I’m okay with that! Something happened the minute I had my first little man—my mindset switched from wanting perfection to just needing to be finished.
With Month 3, you have options. The main block is the traditional drunkards’ path. You can choose to applique the unit or try your hand at curved piecing. The drunkards’ paths in the original quilt were appliqued.
For the appliqued version, follow the suggestions from last month’s circle applique.
For sewing the curved method, you have a template in your pattern booklet that you will also need for Month 4. I think you’ll find the instructions comprehensive. While I didn’t have an opportunity to post a video last month, I’ll post a video on our website for sewing a drunkards’ path, so please be on the lookout for that.
Sewing Tip: When sewing around circles or curved pieces, set your stitch length lower—around 1.5 is usually a good starting point. Sew slowly and let the feed dogs do their work. Often, the feed dogs will automatically sew the fabric on its curved path. Give it a try!
Please reach out with any questions.
Happy creating,
